What is Marne?
Marne is not a French province. La Marne can mean the river that flows through Champagne and joins the Seine, or the department numbered 51 in the Grand Est region. Châlons-en-Champagne is the department’s administrative capital.
The same pronunciation appears in names such as Haute-Marne, Seine-et-Marne and Val-de-Marne. In French, both the river and the department are feminine, so you will hear la Marne.
What does the name Marne mean?
Marne does not have a simple everyday translation in modern French. Its history goes back to the ancient river name Matrona, recorded by Julius Caesar. A study by Noémie Beck traces later forms including Materna, Matrena, Maderna and Marna before Marne appeared in the Middle Ages.
The same study connects Matrona with the Gaulish word mātīr, meaning “mother”, and interprets the ancient name as “Divine Mother”. The river later gave its name to the modern department.
