There is no single distance from Paris to Champagne because the wine region covers a wide area. For its two main gateways, Reims is about 144 km (89 miles) by road and roughly 45 minutes by TGV from Paris-Est. Épernay is around 140 km (87 miles) away and about 1 hour 20 minutes by direct train. Either city can work for a day trip.

Why 130 km can be misleading
The often quoted figure of 130 km is close to the straight-line distance between Paris and Reims. It is not the road distance to every part of Champagne.
The Champagne appellation covers about 34,300 hectares and 319 villages, known as crus. More than 120 miles separate its furthest points. The vineyards extend across five French departments: Marne, Aube, Aisne, Haute-Marne and Seine-et-Marne.
Its four main wine-growing areas are the Montagne de Reims, Marne Valley, Côte des Blancs and Côte des Bar. Your actual journey therefore depends on the town, village or producer you plan to visit.
How to get from Paris to Reims
By train
The TGV journey from Paris to Reims takes around 45 minutes. Reims has two stations, and the distinction matters when planning a short visit. Reims-Centre is in the city centre. Champagne-Ardenne TGV is in Bezannes and is connected to Reims by tram.
Reims-Centre is the practical arrival point for the cathedral and central sights. Check the station name before buying your ticket, especially when comparing different departures.
By car
The main route follows the A4 and then the A344 into Reims. When checked on 16 October 2026, Mappy proposed routes of 144 to 178 km, taking between 1 hour 27 minutes and 2 hours 17 minutes. The A4 has tolls, and travel time changes with traffic and your starting point in Paris.
How to get from Paris to Épernay
By train
Direct trains from Paris-Est reach Épernay in around 1 hour 20 minutes. This is usually the simplest option if your plans centre on Avenue de Champagne and the town itself.
Regional trains also connect Reims and Épernay on the route promoted locally as the “Ligne des Bulles”. The two cities are about 28 km apart, so they can be combined if the timetable suits your plans.
By car
Épernay Tourism gives a distance of 140 km from Paris and an approximate driving time of 1 hour 30 minutes. The A4 runs near Épernay, but the final route depends on your destination in town or in the surrounding vineyards.
Should you take the train or drive?
Take the train for a day focused on central Reims or Épernay. Both stations put you within reach of the main urban sights without dealing with motorway traffic or parking.
A car is more useful when you want to visit several villages, follow a wine route or move between separate vineyard areas. It also adds tolls, parking and variable traffic to the day.
Can you visit Champagne on a day trip from Paris?
Yes. Reims is the easiest rail day trip because the fastest journey takes around 45 minutes and Reims-Centre is close to the cathedral and other central sights. Épernay also works as a day trip, with a longer journey of around 1 hour 20 minutes.
